Sir William Osler Elementary is named after William Osler (1849–1919), a Canadian-born physician.
Osler has Mandarin and Cantonese classes, with beginner and intermediate levels. There are also Mad Science and Kilometer Club (running) programs.
The school has a competitive cross country team and track and field.
Osler has a music program including a choir and a band, both of which perform at various locations within Vancouver such as Granville Island and Oakridge Mall. The band travels to Ottawa each year to compete with senior bands and has returned with a Gold Medal several times.
Osler teaches from kindergarten to grade seven. The courses includes the regular Math, Science, English, Physical Education and also has ESL (English as a Second Language) classes for students still needs to improve their abilities to speak, read and write English in order to study in normal classes.
Some of the teachers has very rich history such has being an Olympic steeplechase runner and co-founder of the Vancouver Sun Run.
The "CARES" (Cooperation, Achievement, Respect, Everyone, Safety) is central to the school. Respect and caring has always been expected to be reflected throughout the school. This is reinforced at the bi-weekly assemblies, which organize and recognize students who have displayed caring and thoughtful behaviour during the previous week.
Staff and parents used the School Growth Process to select goals in technology and social responsibility to emphasize for the school year. Although these goals will be our emphasis for the year, Osler follows the B.C. Ministry of Education curriculum in all subject areas. All appropriate goals are respected and encouraged.
Their mission is to build a supportive school community dedicated to realizing high expectations for personal growth and achievement in a safe and caring environment.
